Kilts for Men - What Is It About A Man in A Kilt?

"A man in a kilt is a man and a half"
This old Scottish saying has passed down through the generations and is as relevant today as it was back then. The allure of kilts for men has certainly always been a source of intrigue for women all over the world.
So, what is it about a man in a kilt that attracts so much female attention?
The Kilt and Masculinity
Throughout history, the kilt has been an enduring symbol of masculinity. For many Scots, the kilt has come to symbolize the fight for Scottish independence on the battlefield many years ago. Wearing kilts is, for many men, one of the most powerful ways to represent their history and ancestry.
This famous garment is bound up with so much symbolic importance. It is so much more than just a pattern. Kilts, for most men, represent their identity, heritage and the bravery and tenacity of their ancestors. The deep significance of kilts has carried forward in time and can still be seen in Scottish celebrations and events that take place throughout the world today.
Kilts Are Famous Across the World
One such occasion is the replication of the Scottish Highland Games that take place throughout the world. This year, Japan is celebrating its 35th Highland games, which provides the opportunity for Japanese families to partake in a wide variety of activities that traditionally took place in the highlands of Scotland to test a man's strength, perseverance, and stamina. Of course, being an all encompassing Scottish event, all these activities are undertaken wearing kilts.
For men all over Japan, this is a chance to celebrate traditional Scottish culture and test themselves against each other. They particularly relish in the male competition that comes part and parcel with events like as "tossing the caber" and "hammer throwing". Highland games competitions are also organized in New Zealand, Australia, North America and Indonesia.
When you consider the role kilts have played throughout the ages, it's no wonder that they are so strongly associated with masculinity.
There is no room for argument, wherever you are in the world, women love men in kilts. Whether it is the novelty factor, the way they look or their strong links with masculinity, wearing a kilt is a sure way to get more female attention.
For a lot of men, this is often all the encouragement they need.

What is a Leather Kilt?

What is a Leather Kilt?

Modern-day kilts have evolved from the classic plaid wool and cloth garments that were worn centuries ago. Today, kilt designers are creating styles out of unique materials that appeal to modern gents. One of the latest styles to come from kilt makers' workshops is the leather kilt. Read on to learn more about them.

The Basics

If you're not familiar with the term, a kilt is a long skirt that is made for men, not women; although women now wear kilts, too. The classic kilt originated in Scotland and was typically made out of plaid fabric called tartan. As times have changed, new types of materials began to be used for kilts and leather kilts were born. A leather kilt is a men's kilt that is made out of the material leather. Genuine leather is produced from the hide of an animal, usually a cow; however, lamb, ostrich and goat leather is also available. A vegan leather or PU leather kilt is made out of a plastic material that is designed to look and feel similar to the real thing. These "fake" leather kilts are less expensive and may be preferred by vegans and vegetarians. Today, leather kilts come in a variety of colors. Black and brown are more traditional, but you can also find kilts in red, blue, green and other hues.

Styles of Leather Kilts

Leather Kilts come in many different styles. Some are designed to bring to life the look of classic tartan kilts. These designs usually have flat panels in their fronts and pleats along their sides. Most kilts of this type will have buckling strap closures. More modern versions may feature cargo pockets or have edgy embellishments like chains or studs. Some leather kilts are inspired by biker gear rather than classic kilts. These include chaps-style kilts that are made to wear over trousers or jeans and asymmetrical gladiator-style kilts that are on the short side.

Caring for Leather Kilts

A genuine leather kilt requires some special care to keep it in good condition. Follow these tips to ensure that the one you purchase keeps looking like new for as long as possible:
1. Avoid washing a leather kilt, as every time you launder it, you remove some of the leather's natural oils. If the leather gets dirty, try spot cleaning it with a cleaner made especially for genuine leather.
2. To keep the leather supple, apply a wax-free leather moisturizer or lotion to your kilt on a monthly basis. Follow the instructions on the packaging for best results.
3. Hang your leather kilt in a cotton garment bag in the closet rather than plastic. Cotton will allow the leather to breathe. Never hang a leather kilt up without a bag to protect it, as colors from other clothing could rub off on it, and it could become scratched or damaged in the closet.
Now that you know the ins and outs of leather kilts, you're ready to find one for your wardrobe! Check out our selection of stylish made-to-measure leather kilts at Scottish Kilt Shop.

Prince Charlie – Scottish icon and a tragic hero

The story of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his midnight flit from the shores of his  beloved Scotland is almost a thing of myth, and certainly legend, nowadays – after  centuries of romantic embellishment by his friends and enemies alike! Today we’ll  look  at the historic eventsleading to the famous exile of the Bonnie Prince, and  the effects  of his actions which have reverberated through time to still be  remembered among all  Scots today.
The Young Pretender captured the imaginations of the Scottish people when he  attempted to lead them in rebellion against the English, to gain what he saw as  his  own rightful place upon the British throne. Despite being born and raised in  Rome,  spending only one full year in Scotland during which he led thousands of  men to their  deaths, and then escaping once again to Europe, where he lived out  the rest of his life  in exile, Bonnie Prince Charlie has gone in history as a Scottish   icon – so much so  that even the ubiquitous formal kilt jacket is named for him,   the Prince Charlie!
Born in 1720, the son of James Francis Edward Stuart and grandson of James II of England, Charles Edward Stuart was a very charismatic and handsome young man, who fervently believed (as did his father and grandfather before him) that his rightful place was as the ruler of Britain. In 1744, under the guidance of his father – who had obtained the support of the French government for a planned invasion of Britain – Charles Edward went to France to assume command of their forces. However, poor weather conditions, and the mustering of a powerful British fleet to oppose the invaders, led to cancellation of the plan by the French.
The Jacobite cause was still supported by many Highland clans, and Charles hoped for a warm welcome from these clans to start a rebellion by Jacobites throughout Britain, but there was no immediate response. Undaunted, Charles raised his father’s standard at Glenfinnan and attracted pledges of support from many of the Jacobite Highland clans, though others stayed loyal to the Hanoverian crown. With his new found allies, Charles marched on the city of Edinburgh, which quickly surrendered to his forces. On 21 September 1745 he fought and won the Battle of Prestonpans, defeating the only “official” army in Scotland, and by November wasmarching south for London as the leader of around 6,000 men
Having secured the border town of Carlisle, Charles’ army progressed as far as Derby, in the Midlands of England. . Having  secured the  border town of  Carlisle,  Charles’ army  progressed as far as Derby, in the Midlands of  England. Here, despite the Prince’s strong objections,  the decision was taken by his council to return the  army to Scotland, in part due to the lack of the  support from English Jacobites that Charles had  expected, but also due to growing rumours of a  massive English force being sent to smash the  rebellion. By now Charles Edward was being pursued  by King George II’s son, the Duke of Cumberland,  who finally caught him at the Battle of Culloden, the  last hand-to-hand battle fought on British soil, on 16 April 1746The Battle of Culloden was the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745 and part of a religious civil war in Britain..At Culloden the Jacobite forces were almost entirely massacred. Charles had no military experience, and ignored the advice of his commander, choosing to fight on open marshy land. With the Jacobite soldiers charging directly into the muskets and cannon of Cumberland’s army, and Cumberland pursuing and hunting down the fleeing survivors, the result was a catastrophe for the Highlanders which ultimately led to the banning of the wearing of kilts and eventually the highland clearances and scattering of the clans. This massive defeat has sent echoes down through the ages; “The ‘45” is still referred to in Scotland to this very day, and the battlefield has been preserved with memorial stones for all the clans who lost men during the battle.
Charles disbanded his surviving troops and went into hiding. Hunted as a fugitive for more than five months this time was fraught with danger for him, but the Highlanders never betrayed him, and he escaped to France in September 1746. This flight to safety has been immortalised in songs and stories, such as ‘The Skye Boat Song’, and is the most famous part of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s legacy to many Scots today. With the Hanoverian loyalists keeping a keen eye out for the rebel prince, he was forced to allow himself to be smuggled out of Scotland on a humble fishing boat, disguised as the Irish maid of Flora MacDonald. The plot was discovered too late and Charles Edward escaped safely, Flora however was punished with imprisonment in the Tower of London for her part in helping him, but bore up stoically, and always stated that she acted from a sense of Christian charity and would have helped him in his defeat regardless of her own political leanings.
Two years later Charles Edward was expelled from France as part of an  agreement with the English to drive all Stuarts from the country as a show of f  faith in the recent French-English peace brokering, and that this point his effects  on Scottish history recede once more. For a number of years Charles Edward  drifted around Europe, still hoping to win support for his cause, even visiting  London secretly in 1750 and 1754. After the death of his father in 1766, The  Young Pretender finally returned to Italy, where he spent his final years, dying in  Rome on 31 January 1788. But for a year, as a young man, he captured the  heart of a rebel nation and became a tragic hero; his struggles and failures  romanticised and carried down through the generations, leaving a legacy no Scot  can forget!

Kilt Society

The idea for Kilt Society began in early 2014 as we started planning our wedding. I'd been selling kilts since 2004, starting out as a side project while at university and run from a bedroom in my mum's house.I met Emma at university and the hobby slowly turned into a proper business.I never planned to sell kilts, but the company grew and developed over the years into an impressive enterprise, following the weaves and turns of our life.

Quick Look at The History of The Kilt

Highland dress and the tartan are among the most powerful, romantic and dramatic of all the symbols of Scotland. It has been claimed that 'a man in a kilt is a man and a half' their really is something about the wearing of the kilt that confers extra stature on its owner.
It is absolutely no coincidence that the kilted 51st Highland Division was rated by the Germans as the most formidable of all the formations they came across during the First World War. Certainly the British government had no doubts on the matter when, after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie, they banned the use of Highland dress and the tartan, which they clearly saw as an incitement to further subversion. Offenders were killed or sent to the colonies.
The form of Highland dress has always owed much to the army and it was the Highland regiments which kept the Scottish kilts and the tartan alive until at last, in 1782, their use was once more permitted. Before that time, Scots were only permitted to wear any Scottish wear, if they joined the British Armed Services. Pipers were permitted to wear their kilt, but usually in a Regimental color. Other service men - most were permitted to wear the balmorals with their clan badge on it. A high price to pay to wear highland clothes, laying their life on the line to do it.
Today, tartans abound and it is an unfortunate person indeed who will not be told by the kilt shops that he or she indeed can buy 'their' tartan. The ascribing of a vast plethora of names to membership of various clans has long been an industry in itself - luckily there is insufficient time or space here to enter into that particular subject!
The element of fantasy is still with us today now that kilt Scotland is popular as never before. There is something that is very special indeed about the kilt and the tartan. It is a limp back indeed that does not straighten as the kilt is buckled on and a poor heart that is not lifted just a little, at the sight of the colors of the clan.
Even if someone doesn't have an own kilt there is an easy way to write in the internet search for example kilt hire uk and soon the problem should be solved. Ghillie brogues, black outfit or grey outfit almost everything, maybe apart from blankets
is possible to hire.
Kilt history brought us to this point when kilt become, beyond any doubt, the national dress of Scotland. Let us keep it that way and ensure it is not allowed to decline into mere fancy dress.
